IKAT

The Malay word "ikat" refers to the hand-made technique of producing wild silk. In Indonesia, the manufacture of ikats is entrusted only to artisans belonging to a select dynasty. Such masters today live in only a few villages. The fabric is created by women, and the patterns on the threads are applied exclusively by men. Craftsmen dye the yarns before they go to the loom. Chunk maintains the strength of its owner and serves as a talisman of protection.
